First-Time Visitors to Dubai: A Guide for an Unforgettable Trip

Planning your first trip to Dubai? Whether you’re here for a short stay or a longer adventure, this city offers an exciting mix of tradition, modernity, and luxury. From iconic landmarks to local customs, we’ve put together some essential tips to ensure your visit is smooth and memorable.

1. Best Time to Visit

Dubai’s desert climate means warm weather all year round, but the best time to visit is between November and March when temperatures are more comfortable for outdoor activities. This is also when Dubai hosts major events like the Dubai Shopping Festival, so you can enjoy pleasant weather and great deals.

2. Public Transportation: Use the Metro

Dubai’s metro system is a clean, efficient, and affordable way to get around. The hotel is conveniently located near a metro station, making it easy to visit popular attractions like the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and the Palm Jumeirah. The metro also connects to Dubai International Airport, so you can start exploring as soon as you land.

3. Local Etiquette and Cultural Norms

Respecting Dubai’s cultural norms is key to having a positive experience. Public displays of affection should be minimal, especially in more traditional areas. During the holy month of Ramadan, refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. The local Emiratis are very welcoming, so feel free to ask questions about their customs—it’s a great way to learn and connect.

4. Currency and Payment Methods

The currency in Dubai is the UAE Dirham (AED). While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s always handy to carry some cash, especially when visiting smaller markets or using public transport. ATMs are easily accessible across the city, and most places accept contactless payment options too.

5. Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun

Dubai’s heat can be intense, especially during the summer months. Always carry a bottle of water and stay hydrated. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are essential when exploring outdoors, especially if you’re planning to visit attractions like the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve or the beach.

6. Discover Local Experiences

Beyond the towering skyscrapers and luxury malls, don’t miss the chance to explore the more traditional side of Dubai. The historic Al Fahidi district, Dubai Museum, and the bustling Deira Souks offer a glimpse into the city’s rich cultural heritage. Taking an abra (water taxi) ride across Dubai Creek is a must for first-time visitors.

7. Tipping Etiquette

While tipping is not mandatory, it’s appreciated in Dubai, especially in the service industry. At restaurants, a 10-15% tip is common if a service charge isn’t already included. Tipping hotel staff, taxi drivers, and other service workers is at your discretion, and even a small gesture is valued.

My family and I had a wonderful vacation at Ramada Plaza! The kids loved the pool, and I appreciated the family-friendly atmosphere. The hotel is conveniently located near the metro, making it easy to explore Dubai. Our room had a breathtaking view of the Deira city. I can’t recommend this place enough for families visiting Dubai!
